How to Spend 3 Days in Northern Kefalonia
Fiscardo harbor
Located at the northern tip of Kefalonia, Fiscardo is a picturesque harbor village that makes a perfect base for exploring this lush, tranquil part of the island. With its colorful waterfront, surrounding beaches, and proximity to natural and cultural highlights, it’s easy to enjoy a memorable three-day escape without ever feeling rushed.
Here’s how to make the most of your time in Northern Kefalonia, with Fiscardo as your home base.
Day 1: Settle into Fiscardo & Discover Nearby Beaches
Morning:
Start your trip by exploring Fiscardo’s harbor. This is one of the few places on the island that retained its traditional architecture after the 1953 earthquake, offering a unique atmosphere. Wander through cobbled paths, take in the Venetian-style houses, and soak up the peaceful charm of the town. If you are up for a short walk, check the old Venetia light-house that overlooks Fiscardo’s harbor.
Midday:
A short drive from the village brings you to Emblisi Beach, known for its calm, clear waters and flat rock formations perfect for lounging. If you prefer a more shaded, olive-tree-lined cove, Foki Beach is another nearby option with a serene setting.
Evening:
End the day with a stroll along the waterfront and take in the view of the yachts and sailboats as the sun begins to set.
Day 2: Day Trip Myrtos Beach and Assos
Morning:
Myrtos Beach is Kefalonia’s most iconic beach. Famous for its electric blue water and towering cliffs, it’s a must-see. The view from the top is just as impressive as being down on the beach, so stop at the lookout point before making your way down. The drive from Fiscardo is approximately 50 minutes, and going earlier in the morning will make it easier for you to find a good spot and a sunbed at the beach.
Afternoon:
Making a stop at the scenic village of Assos, on your way back is highly recommended. Assos is located approximately 40 minutes from Fiscardo. This quiet village is tucked between forested hills and the turquoise sea, connected to a peninsula crowned by the ruins of a Venetian fortress. The hike to the top is steep but short, and the panoramic views are worth the effort. We would recommend doing the ascent later in the afternoon when the temperatures are not at the highest. Bringing plenty of water with you will be necessary.
Evening:
Return to Fiscardo in the early evening and enjoy the relaxed pace of village life as you wind down for the night.
Day 3: Melissani Cave and Antisamos Beach
Morning:
Head south to visit the fascinating Melissani Cave Lake. This is around a one-hour drive from Fiscardo, but worth it! This partially open-roofed cave glows a brilliant blue when the sun is directly overhead. A short rowboat ride takes you across the underground lake, surrounded by limestone walls and hanging vegetation.
On your way there you can make a quick stop in Agia Efimia, a peaceful coastal village.
Midday:
Antisamos Beach is located approximately 30 minutes from Melissani Cave. It is one of the most famous beaches in Kefalonia and it is also organized with beach bars and sunbeds. The earlier you get to the beach the better chances you have of finding a good sunbed and parking spot.
Evening:
If you are looking to escape the buzzing atmosphere of Fiscardo, reserving a table at Alati restaurant, in Alaties beach, is an ideal alternative. Make sure to get there in time for the amazing sunset!
With its blend of natural beauty, traditional charm, and quiet beaches, Northern Kefalonia is a dream destination for those looking to unwind and explore.
